At CenterWell, we recognize that good nutrition plays an important role in the health and happiness of seniors. Our care providers are dedicated to helping each patient develop a diet that is not only healthy but also delightful and simple to follow.

Seniors tend to eat healthier than other age groups

The Healthy Eating Index shows that seniors often eat better than other age groups, scoring 63 out of 100!(1) That’s pretty good, but there’s still ways seniors like you can do even better. To improve your diet, try plenty of produce, whole grains and dairy products. It also helps to limit eating foods that are high in sugar, fat and salt.

Getting advice from healthcare providers, and encouragement from family and friends, can make it easier to choose and delight in the right foods so you get the nutrients you need.

Have you chatted with a primary care provider about your nutritional needs? At CenterWell, our healthcare professionals provide personalized advice to fit your unique nutritional requirements. Don't hesitate to request an appointment for personalized guidance on healthy eating habits.

Eat a variety of yummy foods

Enjoy more fruits, veggies, whole grains and dairy products while reducing sugar, fat and salt. Friends, family and healthcare providers can support you in meeting these goals.

Protein helps keep your muscles strong. Though many seniors eat enough meat, there are other great protein sources like seafood, beans and dairy. These foods also give you other benefits, such as calcium and vitamins.

In addition, it can be harder to absorb vitamin B12 as we get older, which is essential for energy. Breakfast cereals and eggs can be a good source, and your doctor can guide you on whether vitamins for aging might be helpful.

Stay hydrated

Sometimes, you might not feel thirsty even when your body needs fluids. Drinking plenty of water helps keep you hydrated without adding calories. Flavored water, unsweetened juices in moderation and low-fat milk are also good options.

Enjoy your drinks with meals or throughout the day to stay hydrated. If you enjoy an alcoholic drink, remember to only have a little. As we get older, alcohol can affect us more, increasing the risk of falls.

Enjoy foods and stay safe

Eating should always be enjoyable. Sharing meals can be a wonderful way to spend time with loved ones. If you find it hard to chew or swallow, try different cooking methods to make foods easier to eat. And don’t forget about food safety, as older adults are more prone to foodborne illnesses.
